The Suzuki Method
Developed by Japanese violinist and educator Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, the Suzuki Method is based on the idea that musical ability is not an inborn talent, but something that can be developed in every child. Drawing inspiration from the way children naturally learn to speak their native language, Dr. Suzuki called his approach the “Mother Tongue Method.” Just as children learn to speak by listening, imitating, and repeating words in a nurturing environment, they can learn music in much the same way; with encouragement, immersion, and love.
In the Suzuki approach, students begin by learning to play by ear. This allows them to focus on tone, posture, and musical expression right from the start, developing a strong technical and emotional foundation before introducing music reading. Repetition, consistent practice, and step-by-step mastery are key elements of the method, helping students gain fluency and confidence as they grow.
Parental involvement is also a cornerstone of the Suzuki philosophy. Parents attend lessons, take notes, and help guide daily practice at home. This team-like support system strengthens the bond between parent and child and reinforces learning in a positive, encouraging way.
Listening to music daily is another essential part of Suzuki study. Students regularly listen to recordings of the pieces they are learning, helping them absorb phrasing, tone, and musical nuance much like they would absorb the sounds of spoken language.
By nurturing the heart as well as the hands, the Suzuki Method cultivates not only technical skill but also a deep love for music. It fosters qualities such as patience, focus, perseverance, and joy -offering children a meaningful and lasting connection to music that can enrich their lives for years to come.
"Teaching music is not my main purpose. I want to make good citizens. If a child hears fine music from the day of his birth and learns to play it, he develops sensitivity, discipline and endurance. He gets a beautiful heart."
-Dr. Shinichi Suzuki
In my studio, I strive to uphold these values by creating a warm, supportive environment where children feel seen and encouraged. I believe that every child can learn, and that musical study is as much about nurturing character as it is about developing skill. Whether your child is brand new to the piano or continuing their journey, I am committed to walking alongside them-and you- as they grow into confident, expressive musicians with a lifelong love for music.
